Eighth Grade Placement

Class of 2023 Placement at Glenbrook North

Northbrook Junior High and Glenbrook North High School educators work together to thoughtfully place every eighth-grader in his or her freshman year courses. Our mutual goal is for each student to be treated as an individual. GBN courses are rigorous and college preparatory. Students should feel challenged but not overwhelmed.

From year to year, we see variances in class placement, which reflect the particular strengths and characteristics of each class. In addition, this year, GBN implemented a new placement test - PSAT  8/9. As we all adjust to the new test, we are thankful for our partnership with the high school and the extent to which they continue to engage with us to increase transparency, share more data, and prepare our students for success.

We have now received the most up-to-date data on the placement of our current eighth-grade class (GBN Class of 2023) in the five academic subject areas - English, Social Studies, Science, Foreign Language, and Math. Placement for the first four subject areas remain both proportional to our class size at GBN and in line with historic trends for regular core course, with reasonable variances for both the particular graduating class and the new placement test. Honors courses show appropriately higher variances given the nature of smaller groups. Math placements had a more marked shift for this class year. Math therefore remains our primary area of curricular focus. We are also developing additional PSAT 8/9 preparation. We’ll continue to update our community on those processes.
